Where's that voice coming from...?

Today I got to give only my second-ever presentation via Skype, to a small but interested (as far as I could tell) audience at LaGrange College, arrangements made by my colleague Kevin, a faculty member in LaGrange's mathematics department. (Thanks, Kevin!) Kevin and I took part in a Project NExT session at the MAA sectional meeting in Tuscaloosa last March (about which I blogged briefly here), at which time he shared some really neat online networking tools for helping increase real-time student engagement in the classroom. I shared some examples of low-stake writing activities (freewriting, doubting and believing, dialoguing, etc.), indicating their uses in disciplinary classrooms.

Today's telepresentation was an encore performance, to, as near as I can tell, an economist, a writing instructor, a reference librarian, and a couple of mathematicians. (Sounds like the set-up to a lousy joke...) They had great questions, and seemed legitimately engaged.

It's hard to tell from afar. If I learned nothing else from the presentation, I learned how awkward it is working with a group via video feed, dealing with subpar audio and video, and not being immediately present to pick up on subtle nonverbal cues from my interlocutors. In the immortal words of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, ain't nothing like the real thing, baby.

Also: I've decided to take my show on the road...tomorrow, weather permitting, I'm going to hold a couple of my office hours out on the steps of the Ramsey Library...look for me there from 2:30 to 4:00. If my current students are as excited about this idea as my former students (thanks for reading, Jack!) apparently are, I might get a few visitors. I'd love to see my colleagues out there, too. Let's mingle!

Whelmed

The end is near. I can almost see the end of the semester from where I stand. And, unlike many of my colleagues, friends, and students, the rest of my semester should be relatively unbusy (compared to the past month or so) after this coming week. I no longer feel overwhelmed; I'm simply...whelmed. However, Webster's Free On-Line Dictionary lists "whelmed" as a synonym for "overwhelmed," so maybe that's not accurate.

The past few weeks I've felt the urge to post here, but have been at a loss for what to post about. Anything that I felt was worth saying was too trivial to mention or to comprehensive to put into a one- or two-page post.

I thought about writing on some of the Neat Teaching Ideas my colleagues offered up in the Project NExT-SE session at the MAA conference in Tuscaloosa this past weekend. My UNCA colleague Kelli talked about the "peer mentoring" program she's been using in her Calc I class here this semester, and my Project NExT colleague Kade talked about using "math moments" to expose lower-level math students to nifty ideas from higher mathematics, like the Four Color Theorem and Russell's Paradox. I've done this sort of thing in the past, but not recently, and I've never tried putting a peer mentoring program into place. I'm going to try both out in Precalc next fall.

I thought about writing on the feeling I had driving back from Alabama, a feeling of calm, serenity, and oneness, as, just for a moment, I felt like I saw with perfect clarity my role as a teacher and learner. I felt for a moment as though I understood precisely how what I do affects what my colleagues do and reciprocally, and precisely how I help my students to learn as they help me to do the same. It was a pleasant moment.

I thought earlier today about writing on a common category error my MATH 280 students tend to make...one which I didn't mention in class this morning as I was debriefing them on their latest homework sets. Namely: students frequently confuse conjunction ("and") of mathematical statements with intersection of sets, and disjunction ("or") of mathematical statements with union of sets. There's little to do but practice in order to overcome this confusion, training oneself through repetition to recognize the different between a set or a class on one hand, and a statement or a mathematical claim on the other.

In fact, feel free to chime in even if all you have to say is utterly non sequitur; I always love hearing from my readers, and I want to know where you are right now: puzzled and perplexed? On your marks, get set...

It's been a while, huh?

As you might suspect, I've had a lot going on, keeping me from posting here for the past, oh...two months? Ouch.

What's going on?

The REU's over, but the work has really just begun: the students this year were fantastic. They were smart, fun, and funny, and they worked tremendously hard, producing a ton of interesting mathematics. (We should get at least five papers out of it in the next couple of months, and maybe more beyond that in the follow-up.) And this year it was "buy eight weeks, get one free": six of the eight students ended up traveling to MathFest in Pittsburgh, PA to present on their summer research.

The REU took up much of my time, but I've had a number of other things going on, as well, among them: (1) working on student learning outcomes for both the Mathematics Department and the Writing Intensive program, (2) putting together the ILS Oversight Committee's report to the Academic Policy Committee (still not submitted, but finally almost finished), (3) planning my contribution to the short course I was helping run at MathFest, (4) working with my College of Charleston peeps on our paper on the rhetoric of mathematical writing, (5) looking ahead to my round table discussion of program assessment for this year's CWPA (coming up in a few weeks), (6) laying the groundwork for the book I'm now slated to write for Jossey-Bass (w00t), and (7) trying to get ready for my Fall classes, which start on Monday.

(1) Student learning outcomes: although I see the purpose, ultimately, of programmatic assessment, too highly institutionalized assessment tends to become bureaucratic and corporate. I don't want to say more about my role in this university-wide process this past summer other than that it was frustrating at times, had its minor joys, and though it was ultimately fulfilling in that I feel like some good will come of it, I worry about the intentions some people in administration may have for codifying the university's student learning outcomes as rigidly as is being done. 'Nuff said.

(2) The ILSOC report to the APC: this is more of the same. I see the purpose, and the writing of this document is a worthwhile activity, but one which runs the risk of being overly parliamentary and pro se. 'Nuff said.

(3) MathFest short course on Sage (an open-source computer algebra system): I actually wrote to my colleague Oscar (one of the co-organizers of the short course) in mid-July, a few weeks before the course was to take place, expressing my insecurities about putting together an hour or two of meaningful material.

"Nonsense," was the substance of his reply; "you'll do fine. Write about what you know." So I threw together several worksheets full of Sage code purporting to implement a number of higher-level graph theoretical algorithms and called it good. The worksheets actually went over really well in the short course and filled a rather comfy niche in the program. I felt good about what I'd done.

The moral of the story: just do it.

(MathFest, by the way, was a blast. Pittsburgh's a nice city with lots of pretty runs and nice architecture, the REU students were fun to hang out with, as always, and the MathFest program was replete with fun stuff to see and do. A good time had by all.)

(4) Math rhetoric: as I mentioned in my last post, oh so long ago, Bella and Damian came up from the coast to spend a couple of days with me, hammering out a plan to finish the paper we'd begun (with Nicola, who couldn't make it) on the rhetoric of the writing my REU students had produced in 2008 and 2009. They had a lovely time while here, visiting with and interviewing the REU students from this past year, working on our draft at the time, and just hanging out. I'm happy to say that as of last night we have a draft that's nearly ready to submit to the comp/rhet journal Across the Disciplines. It's the first of what we hope will be...well...at least more than one article on the rhetoric of mathematics and its learning, and the role writing plays in inducting students into the scholarly mathematical community.

(5) CWPA: I'm already looking forward to the Wildacres retreat! It's going to a be a full house this year, several dozen of us crowding into the nooks and niches of the Wildacres North Lodge to join in round table discussions of assessment with various forms and functions. I plan on presenting a brief "natural history" of the assessment that's gone on in our WI program during the past three years, exposing to public view the layers of rock comprising the "pilot" assessment Lulabelle headed up in AY 2007-8, the refinement she and I performed in the following year, the plans for assessment she and I laid out in the lead-up to the university's reaffirmation of accreditation (notice I haven't mentioned SACS yet in this post...), and the modifications those plans underwent as I limned the WI program's assessment of student learning outcomes this past summer.

It's sure to be riveting.

Actually, I'm more looking forward to hanging out with Damian and Bella, and with them planning the next phase of our study of the REU students' writing.

(6) Book: Oh yeah...I'm now under contract to write a text (working title: More Than Numbers) on the role of writing (specifically, writing to learn and writing in the disciplines) in mathematics and the mathematical sciences. Jossey-Bass received well the proposal I pitched to them several months back (in March, I think?), and after some fine-tuning of the project, I was brought on board. I'm excited, but at the same time terrified. I'm confident it'll all work out well, though. I've already done a ton of enlightening reading (if you get a chance, check out Scott L. Montgomery's The scientific voice...it's a fascinating read that, along with several other sources, has helped me put together a theory of the schizophrenic nature of undergraduate mathematical writing), and I have some great ideas. Furthermore, my consulting editor for the project is someone a few of whose books I've read and whom I respect very much; I'm sure she'll be very helpful to me.

I will say this, however: if between now and next March I start randomly babbling to you about reader response theory or the role of writing in the mathematical finance classroom, just smile and nod your head.

(7) Fall 2010: yup, we get underway in two days. Yikes. I'm actually really excited: I've got the first week mapped out in all three of my courses, and I've plotted out what I think are clear and navigable problem-centered paths for both of the lower-level courses (Calc I and Linear Algebra I) to follow.

Calc I is going to begin with a brief review, and then the students will work toward developing the skills needed to solve an optimization problem from economics. They'll need to "invent" the method of secants and tangents, the definition of a limit, and the definition of the derivative; and they'll need to learn how to compute some simple derivatives in order to solve this problem. Once all of that groundwork is laid, we'll spend some time working with the textbook and picking up some useful formulas for limits and derivatives, but everything we do is going to be application-driven and learner-centered. I hope to not have to lecture for more than 10 minutes at a time for the whole damned semester.

Linear's going to be the same: Day One features a variation on the "Markov Dance" that started the semester off the last time I taught this course, in the semi-mythical beginnings of this blog. The limiting behavior of this system is going to be the motivating problem for everything we do in the first half of the course, as we work our way through everything we'll need to do to get to the fun and useful stuff (eigenvalues, diagonalization, and Markov processes): solving linear systems, inversion of matrices, solvability criteria, and finally eigenvalues. I'm going to downplay theory and upplay (what a cool word!) functionality. I hope to get to the fun stuff by the sixth or seventh week, at which time we can spend almost all of our time on applications. It's going to be fun.

I should mention that I've modified my grading schemata somewhat, but not substantially, from last semester: students in both of the above courses will still have an opportunity to perform potentially unlimited revision on most things they hand in, but I'm tempering the grading scale so that it's no longer possible to earn full points back with each revision. I think the system I've set up is a generous and reasonable one, though, and I believe it'll still serve to motivate students to learn rather than to grub for a good grade.

Meanwhile, the Senior Seminar's speaker schedule is chocked full, with four visitors (all versed in speaking to undergraduate audiences) coming to share their knowledge and spend a little time with the students. It's going to be a good semester in that course.

Pre-summer reading and subsequent ruminations

My summer reading has begun with a bang.

I've been working my way through a book my colleague Tip lent to me, Radical equations: civil rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project, by Robert P. Moses and Charles E. Cobb, Jr. (Boston: Beacon Press, 2001). Tip met up with Bob Moses, a noted civil rights leader, Harvard-trained mathematician, and founder of a grassroots math program (the aforementioned Algebra Project) targeting middle-grades mathematics students on the fringe, at the Mathematics and Social Justice Conference Tip attended in Brooklyn a month or so ago. Clearly Tip's thought deeply about the ideas in this book, especially as regards his nascent community-building math program and the NSF grant proposal he and I are soon to set about writing, and he was kind enough to lend his (signed!) copy of the book to me.

I'm about three fourths of the way through the book right now, and though I've found much of the text itself dry and unengaging (particularly when it gets bogged down in the toledoth of Moses's project's converted teachers; at some points it reads like a biblical genealogy: "and Norma Jean begat Shannon, who begat Tom, the Explainer-to-Children. Tom taught twenty years, and then begat Sylvia. From the Delta did Sylvia come, and her students were good in the eyes of the Sunflower County Board of Education..."), one or two of its ideas have really struck me. I've been won over in one respect in particular. To best describe my conversion, I ought to mention a conversation I had with a colleague at a school I recently (in January) visited.

We were talking of undergraduate math majors; I had mentioned that at UNCA we have something on the order of 80-90 majors at any given time, and my colleague was thoroughly impressed. He said that at his school (a school nearly twice as large as UNCA), there were perhaps half as many undergraduate majors. Ever wanting to be helpful, I made some comment along the lines of "I've got some ideas that might help you to bring those numbers up."

My friend's response was something like "I don't think we're looking to do that."

I was taken aback. Not only had I not scored a point on this man's scoreboard (he and I share a long history, and I've never wanted to let him down), but my view that more young people should be helped to embrace mathematics had been met with hostility. This man had no interest in bringing math to the masses; he preferred to let it stay the closely-guarded territory of the few and the proud.

Moses's book has helped me to make out this not-so-well-hidden trap many professional mathematicians fall into: too often we think of math as a religion, a cult of worship into which only a select few are to be inducted, and in which only an even smaller few are allowed to become high priests. We take pride in our weeding out of the undesirables, defined as anyone who doesn't have a natural knack for math, who comes pre-programmed with a love of abstraction and analysis.

I've seen our culling at work at several levels, more clearly at some institutions than at others, and I'm ashamed to say that I've even taken part in it, though unwittingly. Math professors have a tendency to emphasis the arcanity of their field, its abstruseness, its disconnect with reality. Many of us take pride in the difficulty of our field, and make every attempt to show off our own intellects by making math seem imponderable, impenetrable, dense. I saw this most clearly at Illinois, where research mathematicians would show open disdain for all but the brightest undergraduates in their classes ("most of them are dullards, I've got a few who might prove capable"), lending a hand to the top 5% while leaving the others to drown; "they're just not cut out for it."

For too long mathematicians (and scientists of other stripes) have tried to fill their ranks from the lists of the best and brightest of the American studentry (to borrow a wonderful turn of phrase from William Strunk), leaving the dregs to find work elsewhere when they prove themselves incapable of meeting the high standards set for practitioners of math research. This leaves the untouchables, consisting primarily, in this nation, of poorly (read: publicly) educated blacks, latinos, and poor whites, out in the cold.

Moses makes clear that there's something wrong here.

What's called for, in his mind, is a radically different paradigm: rather than drawing from the few whom opportunity and natural talent have buoyed to the top, we ought instead be working to ensure that everyone is given the chance to rise to the surface. With a system wherein all are given the tools needed to excel mathematically, everyone benefits: traditionally underrepresented groups obtain the opportunities they need to succeed academically, and academicians expand broadly the talent pool from which they will one day choose their colleagues and successors. This "bring 'em on, all of 'em," attitude is the core of the Algebra Project, a program committed to making sure that every 6th, 7th, and 8th grader is given the background needed to successfully navigate a college-prep math sequence in high school. As Moses sees it, not everyone will go to college, and while there, not everyone who goes will study mathematics, but everyone should be ready to do so.

It just makes sense.

Moses's work has definitely helped me to come around to this point of view. It's never been so clear to me that I as a mathematician have a good deal of work to do to ensure that I'm doing what I can to grant everyone the chance to experience mathematics, and to succeed at it. Work needs done at all levels, K-12, undergraduate, and higher. And the work done at each stage needs to be interwoven with work done at other stages: vertical integration is called for. I hope Tip and I will be able to capture that spirit effectively in the proposal we put together this summer.

I've also begun the book the Project NExT reading circle has chosen as its first focus of discussion, Ken Bain's What the best teachers do (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2004). I'm (we're) one chapter in, and so far I'm unimpressed. It strikes me as a poorly-assembled pile of truisms and platitudes, absent the concreteness and careful analysis of a seasoned student of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Not that every SoTL text has to build up a rock-solid wall of data and facts, or deluge the reader with a statistical breakdown of every study on teaching efficacy performed since 1970...but this book just seems "lightweight" to me. So far it's a great "rah-rah" feel-good page-turner, but its place might be on the nightstand of a newbie college prof just out of grad school who needs a little cheerleading and from-the-sidelines inspiration. I wasn't a huge fan of Maryellen Weimer's book, but I found it far more useful and engaging than Bain's, at least to date.

I ought also say a word or two about preplanning I've begun for Fall's classes. Francine's agreed to help me go through the notes and homework problems we used in 280 this past semester, retooling them, getting them good. I've already written a couple new in-class exercises dealing with writing mathematics.

The one I'm happiest about was inspired by a conversation I had with my colleague Lulabelle from the Sociology Department (I'm on a team of folks helping her out with a pilot assessment program for writing across the curriculum). She indicated that as a part of the work that'd need doing for this grant we're collaborating on, I'd have to to be able to train my colleagues how to "read" mathematics. I got to thinking about how I would best do this, and realized that it's likely easiest simply to highlight the linguistic analogues mathematics shares with "natural" human languages: syntax, grammar, orthography. Not only would an exercise indicating these analogues help my colleagues; it would help my 280 students, too.

The exercise consists of a take-home portion and an in-class portion. Each part comprises three written passages of varying levels of quality; the take-home passages are in "English" and discuss the chemical element boron. Students (and my colleagues) should have no trouble in ranking these passages from worst to best, and in explaining their reasoning for the ranking. The in-class passages are in "math," each giving a "proof" of the fact that the sum of two odd numbers is even. Having given them the chance to warm up in "English," I now ask the students to rank the proofs from worst to best, and to justify their rankings. This is a more difficult task, but once it's done my students (and colleagues) should be able to see more clearly that good writing in math is only a half-step away from good writing in any other discipline.

Happy day after Pi Day!

Hey, All!

Yesterday was the 301st Anniversary of the naming of π (celebrated), and the Math Club event I helped to put together went off splendidly. Over 50 people (mostly my Number Theory class combined with Quidnunc's Linear Algebra class, and a few assorted hangers-on) gathered to watch 6 folks compete in the pie-eating contest and 2 in the π-reciting event. Bocephus finished off about 90%-by-volume of his pie in 3 minutes and 14 seconds, giving him the victory in the first activity, and Ulrich recited 64 places after the decimal to garner the win in the second.

Meanwhile, my classes are chugging along nicely (I don't think anyone was too distraught over classes being cancelled on Friday). In Calculus we're almost done with shortcut rules, in 280 we're set to talk about relations and functions, and in Number Theory we're headed back to the text to talk about more on congruence arithmetic for a little while before tackling a couple of primality testing algorithms. The first of my Senior Seminar students' presentations comes next week, too, as Beulah will speak about hyperbolic geometry and how it inspired M.C. Escher. She's shown me her slides, and she did a great job in putting them together. If she can work out the timing, I think it'll be a fantastic talk.

Now, I've gotta hit the road to Georgia, hoping to make it to Statesboro in time for this afternoon's Project NExT-Southeast events. Tomorrow morning brings our panel on PBL/IBL. I'm looking forward to that, and I hope we get more than the 9 pre-registered participants.
